The Indian Premier League (IPL) is a professional Twenty20 cricket league in India which was founded in 2008 by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) The league has a franchise-based model with teams representing different cities in India. Here is a brief history of the IPL.... In 2007 the BCCI announced the formation of the IPL with the first season scheduled to be held in 2008. Eight teams were initially selected for the first season of the IPL, namely Chennai Super Kings, Delhi Daredevils, Kings XI Punjab, Kolkata Knight Riders, Mumbai Indians, Rajasthan Royals, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Deccan Chargers (later replaced by Sunrisers Hyderabad). The first season of the IPL was held in 2008, with Rajasthan Royals emerging as the champions. The second season of the IPL was held in 2009, but was marred by controversy due to security concerns and the tournament being moved to South Africa. The third season of the IPL was held in 2010, with Chennai Super Kings winning their first title. Over the years, the IPL has become one of the most popular and lucrative cricket leagues in the world, attracting top players from around the globe. The format of the IPL has also evolved over the years, with the addition of playoffs and the introduction of a mega auction every few years, where teams can buy and sell players. In 2020, the IPL was held in the United Arab Emirates due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with Mumbai Indians winning their fifth title. The IPL has also been a platform for young Indian players to showcase their talent with many of them going on to represent the Indian national team. The current champions of the IPL are Chennai Super Kings, who won the title in 2021.
